In 220 A.D China fell into civil war. The region was divided and ruled for over 350 years by commanders and local leaders.
Then, in 589 A.D. a new emperor took over, this emperor was Yang Jian. Yang Jian started the Sui Dynasty. After gathering all of the Chinese people Jian began again to build up the Chinese Empire. He ordered building projects including canals, roads, bridges and buildings. He also ordered for the Great Wall to be repaired and strengthened. In order to accomplish the projects Jian used peasants for labor like slavery.
His force of labor orders made the peasants dislike him, and eventually led to a peasant uprising that would lead to the overthrowing of the Sui Dynasty in 618 A.D.
